Wenger: Arsenal can't start the season slowly again

Arsene Wenger has urged his Arsenal side to start the season quickly after seeing last season’s title race effectively end after just six games.

The Gunners won just two of their opening six fixtures in 2014-15, drawing four, while Chelsea recorded five wins from their first six games to open up a six-point gap over their London rivals.

The north Londoners then lost to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge at the start of October, before dropping points at home to Hull City, to leave them 11 points behind the eventual champions with just two wins in eight games.

And Wenger accepts that Arsenal have no such room for another false start this term, as the club seek to win their first Premier League title since 2004.

“It was the fact they started strong and we didn’t,” Wenger said as he explained how last season’s title dreams faded.

“They were more stable than us defensively, at the start of the season especially.

“After six games, we were 11 points behind Chelsea. We finished 13 points behind Chelsea. That means after six games the decision was made.

“That is what they had – a strong start while we had a slow start.”

Wenger insists there were mitigating circumstances for Arsenal’s ponderous beginning to the 2014-15 season, with three key first-team players suffering injury blows, but he maintains that there will be no such repeat this term.

“There were reasons, that’s for sure, “said Wenger. “We lost Giroud, Koscielny and Ozil for four months, right from the start.

“We had Welbeck on August 31. This season, it is different.”
